I decided to do a few other things on the way to my back to Sheve. First, I picked up several med bracelets from storage on the way to see Mawell; there were always ample sets just in case of a ship-wide outbreak. But this wasn’t quite as bad as that, I hoped. Mawell stared at me as I informed her of our new plans. She didn’t look so happy.

“You think this is really necessary?” she asked, putting it on herself.

I nodded. “We’ve got some very dangerous cargo here. I need to be sure the commander of this vessel doesn’t lose health or her mind and throw them out the airlock.”

She nodded, and her bracelet clicked into place, giving me instant readings to her stats.

“We’re moving the pups in with Sheve, too. He’s better equipped than most to watch out for them, and you and I will be on around the clock duty till this is over. I don’t want any other nurses involved, all right?”

Mawell was my superior here, yet I was the one giving her orders. When she nodded and reached for my hand, I let her take it.

“Katya, you know what you’re doing, I’m just here for the ride. I’ve never felt like I couldn’t trust you, even that day in the trial.”

This shocked me. Even though she had put me through as many loops as she had, she’d trusted me? That comment didn’t make much sense to me, at least not right now. I think she saw this, as her face softened.

“Yes, Katya, even then. You’d done so much for our species already, questioning your father, making him think outside the box. He and I knew you were destined for many great things, and that means I will vow to do anything you ask.”

I swallowed, wanting to run away. This was too easy. “Really? No questions asked?”

She let go of my hands and turned to the pups. “Yes, and that means I’m also going to move the pups for you. Go. You’ve some other things to sort out, no doubt.”

“Be careful with them,” I said. “The youngest is very frail. She’s also the one who is carrying the next generation inside her.”

Mawell’s eyes and face fell; there was no way she could have known, and I gave away one secret that really wasn’t mine to give.

But in that second, she smiled and spoke for me. “Of course. They’ll be my wards for now, and for the duration, I know we’ll find them a new home, one that will suffice enough so they as a species will survive for many years to come.”

I moved to let Mawell pass through the protective doors to the pups. Within a few seconds, she had them both wrapped up and inside her coat. When she opened the door, she cuddled them to her chest and smiled. “I’ve never in my life felt such amazing power, and innocence.”

“That is why they must live,” I said. “It’s not just me. They’re more than special, and this world needs them alive and well.
